Convert JPG to WebP

WebP files are typically a third smaller than the same picture as a JPG, at a quality most people cannot tell apart. Drop your photos below and take the WebP versions away.

How to convert JPG to WebP

1

Drop in your JPGs

One photo or up to ten. PNG and HEIC are welcome too — anything you drop here comes back as WebP.

2

We convert and compress

Each image is converted to WebP and compressed at the same time, so you are not just changing the container.

3

Download

Save them one at a time, or take the whole set as a zip.

Questions

Will a WebP open on my friend's phone?

Yes. Every browser released since 2020 displays WebP, including Safari on iOS, and so do Android and Windows out of the box. The one place you still meet trouble is old desktop software — some older versions of Photoshop and a few printing services will not take a WebP. If you are sending a file to a print shop, send them the JPG.

How much smaller will my file be?

For an ordinary photograph, expect somewhere between a quarter and a half off the JPG. Pictures with large flat areas do better than busy ones. The table of results shows you the exact figure for your own image rather than a claim about images in general.

Does converting to WebP lose quality?

A little, in the same way saving a JPG does. WebP simply gets more out of the same number of bytes. If you want to see for yourself, use the before-and-after slider on the result — it is the same picture, so any difference you can find is a real one.

Can I get AVIF as well?

Yes. Tick AVIF in the format list and you get both. AVIF is smaller still, though a few older browsers cannot read it, which is why WebP remains the safer single choice.
